history everyday life

As we visit various rooms and facilities, we shall discover what everyday life was like for the people who used to live in the Jonas cliff. Let us catch a glimpse of the bedroom, the loft, the bakery and even the latrines !

The bedroom
The living quarters

There used to be a fireplace in this room.
It was used both as a bedroom and as a living room.

The loft

A vaulted room.

It includes a cellar with a small window which can be closed with a shutter.

The latrines

A large area was left in front of the toilet itself, in order to prevent smells from incomodating the users.

The latrines were not built but were dug in the cliff to gain space.

The room included a sink (a rare combinaison in the Middle Ages).

The baker's oven

The baker's oven, a paying community facility, used to belong to the Landlord.
Enough loaves were baked for10 to15 days.

The sketch shows the various steps needed to bake loaves of bread. Dough was prepared in a wooden kneading trough.

Actually, dough was prepared at home and then brought to the oven.
